Bill Greenland has 25 years of experience working for Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) Consultancies with major clients including Shell, Statoil, Total, Suncor, Syncrude, Westcoast, Cenovus, ConocoPhillips, Teck and Barrick. He has broad experience in the following areas: operations management, project management, engineering management, business development, process and mechanical engineering, contract administration, project planning and cost control. He has a diverse background in the following industries: thermal heavy oil, gas processing, oil sands mining, petroleum refining, pulp and paper, and mineral processing. He has worked on all phases of EPC projects from conceptual design through to construction.

During a career spanning more than 40 years, Jim Little has held the positions of:  Manager, Research and Development; Manager, Business Development; Oil Sands Upgrading Technical Specialist, Development Engineer; Project Manager; Project Engineer; Staff Engineer; Tank Farm Supervisor; Operations Engineer; Process Development Engineer; Process Engineer; and Laboratory Technician. He worked for major companies including:  Syncrude, Husky, Lavalin, Suncor and BP.  He has a BSc (Honours) in Chemical Engineering from Strathclyde University in Glasgow, Scotland and Management Development and Adult Education Certificates from the University of Alberta.  He at one time held the US and Canadian Patents for “Controlled Quenching of Hot Petroleum Coke”, was published in Chemical Engineering magazine and currently has an invention disclosure with Syncrude for a Mobile Floating Primary Separation Vessel.  He has experience in the following areas:
  
Plant Operations - Delayed coking, hydrotreating, hydrogen production, H2S removal, sulphur recovery, catalyst loading, unloading and disposal, tank farm and offsites operations, coke-fired steam generation, water treatment, electrostatic precipitation, hot water extraction, tailings ponds, pipeline rupture and oil spill clean up.

Engineering - Project management of crude processing, refrigeration and gas separation including a compressor house for a refinery expansion, ultrafiltration of tailings water, tailings pond deterrent for migrating birds, off-plot sulphur baseline studies, post rupture land and pipeline rehabilitation, creek re-routing, "lost" pipeline locating and remote air monitoring stations installation.  Process design of delayed coker, nitrogen and cold air heating with waste steam.  Facilitating troubleshooting, incident investigation, problem solving, decision making, business strategies, proposal strategies, project kick-offs and start-ups.

Laboratory - Operational analysis of ethylene, polyethylene, methanol and cumene/phenol/acetone.

Carlos Valdes, Ph.D., P.Eng.
Energy Management Specialist

Carlos Valdes specializes in developing and implementing industrial Energy Management Systems (EMS).  He has a proven track record of cutting plant operating costs by reducing emissions, reducing energy consumption and increasing production.  He has over 40 years of process and process development engineering experience in chemical and minerals processing, including over 30 years in the oil and gas industry.  His projects have involved oil sands extraction / bituminous froth treatment, conventional and heavy oil processing, natural gas processing, waste management and reclamation, pipeline transportation and facilities valuation.  His responsibilities have included conceptual process design, process engineering, process research and pilot testing, process modeling and simulations, process feasibility studies, economic evaluations and project management.  He has participated in all aspects of technology development and technology transfer in the energy and resources sectors, including supervision and guidance of project personnel.  He has authored several technical publications and is the holder of two patents and has contributed to several others.  He is an expert in the statistical analysis of engineering and production data and has received awards for technical excellence.

Business and Operational Performance Specialist 

Warren Borysuk brings 25 years of experience in the mining, construction and energy industries.  He is accomplished leader who has held senior management positions and has led teams in a wide variety of areas including engineering, operations, projects, logistics, procurement, debottlenecking, systems design, data warehousing, corporate development and strategic planning.  Warren brings an operational focus and practicality to businesses to improve on bottom line performance, efficiencies and cost management.  His expertise is drawn from working with some of the largest and most competitive companies in the industry including Suncor, Syncrude, Fording, Sherritt, Shell, CNRL, Total E&P, Synenco, NACG, Mammoet, Dockwise, Boskalis and Anglo.  He has extensive experience in oil sand tailings and environmental remediation including construction, pipeline, earth moving and on water services such as dredging, skimming and marine support.

Chris Webster
Project and Construction Management Specialist

Chris Webster has over 40 years of experience in the heavy construction industry working for multi-national, regional and companies for which he was the principal.  His projects ranged in size up to multi-billion dollar facilities in the mining, oil and gas, power generation (including nuclear and combined cycle facilities) and aluminum production facilities both in North America and internationally. In recent years, he has held the positions of project manager and construction director on mega projects. He also has extensive experience in the development of hybrid engineering practices and has developed various construction methods to streamline erection and fabrication.  In addition, he has extensive experience with pilot plants.

Louis D'Souza
Gas and Oil Processing Specialist

Louis D'Souza is a process and technology specialist with 30 years experience of progressive responsibilities with major international companies in the oil and gas industry.  His industry exposure includes project management, design/engineering, procurement, estimation, tendering/proposals, construction, commissioning and facility operation - encompassing several major and medium facilities with international operating companies, EPC/EPCM companies, fabricators and process technology houses.  He was involved in the oil processing design of virtually every Canadian SAGD project now under design, construction or start-up during the last five years: Nexen-Opti Long Lake, MEG Energy Christina Lake phases 1 and 2B, Devon Jackfish 1, 2 and 3, Brion Energy (previously Dover Energy) MacKay River phase 1, Laricina Germain and Saleski pilot plants, NOSC/Statoil Canada commercial demonstration plant phase 1, ConocoPhillips Surmont phase 2 and JACOS (Japan Oil Company) demonstration plant.  He also has extensive gas processing experience including working for companies such as Shell, BP and Nexen.  He more recently worked on the process design for Spectra Energy's gas plant, Fort Nelson Northern Processing Facility.  He designed heavy oil processing batteries, heavy oil emulsion treating and water deoiling equipment for Bankers Petroleum, PetroAndina (Argentina) and treating equipment for Pembina Midstream Limited.  He provided on-site commissioning support, process troubleshooting and operator training for several heavy oil processing plants in Canada such as MEG Energy (Christina Lake), Statoil (Leismur Demonstration Plant), troubleshooting at Petrobank Whitesands and Devon Jackfish 1.  He holds patents for two new technologies (patents granted in Norway and pending in Canada and USA): (1) Method and apparatus for breaking a stable emulsion (Rag) and (2) Method and apparatus for controlling a stable emulsion (Rag) in heavy oil production.  He is currently developing a program to improve the design of key heavy oil processing equipment for better performance and lower chemical consumption.

Derek Macdonald, P.Eng., MBA

Derek Macdonald has over 30 years of experience working with OEM, consulting, contracting, private, and crown corporations with projects up to $2 Billion.  He has an excellent understanding of the Chemical, Oil, Gas and Power Generation industries.  He has extensive knowledge of power generation equipment and the development of power projects for both the industrial and utility markets.  His experience includes:  project management, project engineering, cost engineering, site engineering, contract administration, business development, financial analysis, project evaluation and feasibility studies.  He spearheaded the development of a $1 Billion integrated waste fuel plant for the oil sands and led the establishment of the first dry sulphur capture plant in the oil sands with Syncrude. Mike Rogers
Water Treatment Specialist

Mike Rogers has over 45 years experience in all aspects of industrial water management.  He spent the last 30 years in the oil sands Industry with 20 of these years at Syncrude Canada.  He also has complementary experience in refinery process-side corrosion, fouling control, and extensive utilities experience especially as it relates to high pressure boiler tube failure prevention.  He has gained a thorough knowledge of water management for both SAGD and open pit oil sands operations.  He is considered an expert in his field in water balance and ionic predictive modeling (Matlab and Simulink), produced water treatment, boiler feedwater treatment, cooling water treatment, wastewater treatment, potable water treatment, water treatment for recycle and reuse, issues with water management and tailings for the oil sands industry, boiler tube failure prevention, water-side and process-side corrosion control programs, and engineering and operator training in all the above areas.  He has served as the past chairman of the Industrial Water Treatment Group at NACE, International and past chairman of the Water Treatment Group at the Canadian Oilsands Network for Research and Development.  He has also served as the Chair, NACE Water Conservation and Reuse Group.  He has published extensively with Syncrude Research, NACE, International, International Water Conference (IWC), and Electrical Power Research Institute (EPRI).
